‘A day in the life’ at Elomatic

Janne Syväoja, Senior Manager, Industry

I work at Elomatic as the head of the mechanical design department. I have been enjoying my time at Elomatic for ten years now, and I am excited to utilize my skills and experience in a new role. In my work, I particularly appreciate the opportunity to develop the operations of my unit. I aim to make our operational culture even more flexible and transparent, as well as to improve workflows.

My path at Elomatic has been colourful. I started as a trainee in year 2013 in the Paper and board machines unit. After my tenure, I was seconded to Valmet, responsible for component-specific design in Valmet’s extensive Modular Way development project. After that, I became a senior designer and carried out design assignments for different clients.

My career also includes working as the main user of Catia and developing and implementing various design environments. Additionally, I have also been involved in the development of digital business.

I graduated from Suupohja Vocational Institute as a machine mechanic in 2004. In 2015 I graduated from the Degree Programme in Mechanical and Equipment Design at Jyväskylä University of Applied Sciences and from the MEC degree programme at Lappeenranta University of Technology in 2022. Elomatic supported my master’s studies with a scholarship and flexible working hours, which was very positive.

In my current role as Head of Department, the great thing is that I get to be involved in developing and renewing operations. The aim is to improve workflow and seek relief from the rush by developing, for example, reporting methods, simplifying the manageability of the department and increasing transparency. My days are filled with customer and offer negotiations as well as internal matters in my own department.

My mechanical design department consists of four teams that are able to carry out customer assignments with their strong expertise, from designing machine lines for the paper and board industry to cranes and moving machines, as well as challenging R&D projects. My department is located in different parts of Finland, and now we are also starting to integrate the Polish mechanics team into our daily operations.

Special knowledge of various design disciplines helps in the mechanical design of a particular device. Machinery and equipment design may require very specific special expertise. On the other hand, the unifying factor of the projects is especially machine safety, which must always be taken into account in the design. The value of our work can be seen in improving the customer’s competitiveness, ensuring quality and implementing innovative solutions.

The green transition also affects machinery and equipment. Customers are looking for energy savings, and managing the lifecycle of a machinery or equipment is becoming even more important. This is reflected in the recyclability of necessary materials, improving production efficiency, the need to reduce the carbon emissions of the materials used, and in power source choices. At the same time, data management is evolving, and the optimization capabilities of equipment are improving.

The flexibility of working hours is important to me. The possibility of remote work provides the freedom to also focus on family and leisure time. Personal desire and will are essential for career advancement, and I have been listened to at work and given opportunities for development. Having enjoyed my time in the company for so long indicates that support has been received in various ways.

Elomatic has very diverse expertise in various industrial sectors. This opens up opportunities for development in one’s own work. I recommend Elomatic, as one is sure to find their own path. I have personally changed departments according to my interests. In addition to digitalisation, the mechanical side is also important. I see myself developing mechanical design also in the future.
