Kokkola Energy and Elomatic are implementing electric boiler plants and district heating accumulator in Kokkola’s Industrial Park

Part of future carbon-neutral heat production

Kokkola Energy is constructing two electric boiler plants and a district heating accumulator in the Kokkola Industrial Park (KIP), with the aim of reducing the carbon footprint of its heat production. The upgrade will be reflected in competitive prices and improved reliability for customers. Elomatic is responsible for the design and implementation of this advanced system.

Kokkolan Energia is taking a step towards carbon neutrality in district heating and industrial steam production in the Kokkola region: the company is building two electric boiler plants and a pressurized district heating accumulator in the Kokkola Industrial Park. The project is being implemented in collaboration with the consulting and engineering company Elomatic, with commissioning planned for the end of 2026.

The Kokkola Industrial Park is the largest chemical and metal refining ecosystem in Northern Europe, where several international companies operate. The electric boiler plants to be built not only increase heat production capacity but also offer new possibilities for waste heat storage when combined with a district heating accumulator. This, along with electrification, significantly reduces the carbon footprint of heat production, moving it closer to zero.

A visible benefit for consumers is price stability enabled by diverse production methods. Thanks to the expanded energy production portfolio, Kokkolan Energia can optimize production in response to market fluctuations in electricity and fuel prices. In addition, the comprehensive approach enhances the region’s security of supply.

The plants will be equipped with 60 MW electric boilers, and the energy capacity of the pressurized district heating accumulator will be about 500 MWh. Elomatic is responsible for both the project’s implementation design and the commissioning tasks during the construction phase. The project includes process and plant design, HVAC design, electrical and automation design, procurement, computational fluid dynamics for the district heating accumulator, and project management for the design.

“Elomatic has a long history of projects implemented with energy companies, and recently they have played a key role in many carbon-dioxide-free heat production and storage projects. This experience is valuable in our project,” says Tommi Korpi, Production Manager of Kokkola Energy Oy.

“There’s a lot happening in the Kokkola industrial area right now, and we’re excited to be part of its development. Advancing the green transition is at the heart of our strategy, and we want to be involved in building a more sustainable tomorrow through this project as well,” says Jussi-Matti Leppälä, Sales Manager at Elomatic.
